save Gaia Bianca’s Life!
On June 7, 2005, after 12 years of waiting, our family was blessed with a beautiful baby girl whom we named Gaia Bianca.
Sadly, at 2 ½ months old, she was diagnosed with BILIARY ATRESIA. This is a serious disease of young infants which results in inflammation and obstruction of the ducts, which carry bile from the liver into the intestine. Since bile cannot flow normally, it will eventually cause severe liver damage. The cause of Biliary Atresia has not yet been discovered. Thus, the ONLY mode of treatment for long term survival for a Biliary Atresia patient is a LIVER TRANSPLANT.
Unfortunately, pediatric liver transplant is not yet done here in the Philippines. Pediatric liver transplants are performed in Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Kaoshiung, Taiwan at a cost of around US$75-80,000 (4 Million Pesos). At Queen Mary Hospital in Hong Kong, the transplant costs around US$100,000 (5.4 Million Pesos). In the US, the cost is even more prohibitive. These amounts are simply beyond our means.
Thus, we started a fund drive to raise the amount for the surgery. It will take 5,000 persons donating at least $20 or P1, 000 each for Gaia Bianca to get the medical treatment she needs.
It is in this regard that we are approaching you to appeal to the goodness of your heart. We humbly ask for your assistance in any possible way. Any amount you could spare would mean a chance for Gaia Bianca to survive.
For several years, we have made Saving the Earth as our advocacy. That is why we named our baby Gaia - "Goddess of the Earth". Little did we know that we would now be waging the most important campaign of our life, that of saving our baby- our Earth.
